Career Highlights

The Legend of the Big Jim Gerencser [gehr-in-sir]

His career traces the arc of Ultimate itself: from club-era trailblazer with the Dallas Sky Pilots to professional-era architect of the champion Dallas Roughnecks—Big Jim has left an indelible mark on the sport’s competitive history and its community roots.

Under his on-field leadership, the Dallas Sky Pilots qualified for three straight UPA Nationals, finishing 5th in 1980, 3rd in 1981 and 6th in 1982—the best run by a Texas open team at that time.

Through the next 2 decades he poured energy and personal funding into Dallas youth and college programs, seeding the region’s modern talent pipeline.

In 2015, he purchased AUDL franchise rights and, a year later, launched the Dallas Roughnecks, assembling a superstar roster and personally underwriting operations. The Roughnecks stormed their inaugural 2016 season, going seventeen-and-0 (17-0) and winning the AUDL Championship, still the league’s only perfect season. Dallas went on to dominate, reaching Championship Weekend each of their first three seasons. Tonight’s rosters from the Havoc and the Summit feature players from that dominant Roughnecks era.

Beyond his contributions as a founder and visionary, Big Jim was one of the most dominant players in his era with a killer combination of height, speed, throws, and winning mindset. He was a nightmare opponent who was un-coverable as a receiver and impossible to stop his precision throwing, making Big Jim truly an offensive force while propelling his team to greatness.

As a leader, Big Jim brought the best out of others and led with generosity.

When Jim’s young son was diagnosed with cancer, he formed Early Recognition Is Critical, also known by the acronym ERIC, which is a non-profit that helps people spot cancer symptoms early, talk about them, and seek care sooner. Since launching in 2012, ERIC has reached well over 200,000 children in more than a dozen countries, focusing on education and practical self-exam skills.
